We hear strongly from our rangatahi their appetite to connect with others from across the region, to discuss and explore topics of identity, belonging, peace and compassion.
Mahia te Aroha has been working with secondary school students since 2022 to co-design a youth hui for youth, by youth. Creating safe spaces for gritty conversations. Differences can be very hard to breach. The spaces in which we interact can make us vulnerable, even fearful. Close friends may speak of issues important to them, and having the opportunity to discuss this with peers takes it to another level.
Click here for an insight into what these huis can mean. It’s written by Ngan Dang, one of the student co-creators of the 2023 hui.
We are proud to partner with Grow Waitaha, St Andrew's College and Hillmorton High School on these hui.
“Showing that vulnerability with strangers was empowering…the fact that it was with strangers was awesome, that they could claim parts of identity that maybe [they] haven’t expressed before.”
Kaiako participating in the student hui.
“It is something you can bring [back] to the school because you can have that kind of community”.
Finn, ākonga participating in the student hui.
